When making sugar water for a humming bird feeder what ratio of water to sugar do you use?

Hi,

Very simple recipe:

1 part sugar

4 parts water

First, bring the water to a boil and then slowly add the sugar. Let it boil for a few minutes, then remove from the burner to cool. Store any excess nectar in the refrigerator. Yes, it is that easy!

Hummingbirds cannot smell and depend on their eyesight to seek out flowers and food sources. But do not add food coloring to this hummingbird feeder recipe, it is unnecessary and possibly harmful to the birds. Red portals on the feeders, or even a red ribbon on top, will attract the hummingbirds just as well.

One part sugar to four parts water. And, you don't need to add red vegetable colouring. They'll accept the clear nectar solution you have made.

I put one cup of sugar in a bowl, and add 4 cups kettle boiled water. Then I stir it until dissolved and put it into the fridge to cool down. You don't want to burn those little tongues! When making sugar water for a humming bird feeder what ratio of water to sugar do you use?
We used to have TONS of hummingbirds where I grew up. We always made simple syrup for them. Generally its one cup of sugar to two cups of water.... boiled breifly... then let to rest until cool.

The only caution... is it attracts ants. LOTS of ants. Make sure you have the feeder hanging somewhere that it can drip and the ants wont be a problem!
