What should I paint my bird feeder like?

http://www.toyday.co.uk/shop/images/uplo鈥?/a>

It looks like that, what should I paint it like? Its for my mum, and she likes green and geese? Hahha! :) Any ideas???What should I paint my bird feeder like?
Aw, that's cute. I kinda like it the way it is, actually. Maybe, instead of using the paints you could decorate it to blend into the surroundings. Where will your mom put it? In a tree? Maybe buy some cheap fake cloth leaves (like from the craft section at Wally World or Jo-annas fabrics or something) and glue them to the sides...maybe some acorns or pieces of bark or twigs. Or collect pretty, and unique pebbles.

If you want to keep to the goose theme, maybe you could make a collage of pictures of geese. You could just paint it green and paint a simple pattern of geese on it, but I'm pretty sure I've seen those exact things in the craft section at the local flea market.

I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?

They make squirrel baffels that you can put on your bird feeder pole to keep them from climbing up from the bottom, however they are very resourceful and will look for other ways to get to the bird seed.

Feed your squirrels on the ground with some corn.I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?
Squirrels are a real problem.

The squirrel cones and baffles can keep them from climbing poles but they can jump than 6' up to get to something and sideways they can go even farther.I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?
Navies all around the world use a sheet metal cone on the ropes holding the ships to the docks. Called ';rat guards';, these are tied to the ropes. The sheet metal cone could be pointed down as not to collect rain. Or an non hardening coal tar, black roof stuff, on the pole or stick.
Get a piece of PVC pipe that is almost as long as the pole. Remove the pole and slide the pipe over it and replace in the ground. PVC is slippery and they cannot climb it.
I tried cones, vaseline, baffels, tied bleach bottles all over the pole. Nothing seemed to stop the little buggers. So I bought one of those elongated bird feeders, made of plastic, covered with fine screening, that has 12 ports for birds to feed. I hung it from a shepherds hook and never had a squirrel get at the feeder all winter. They're out there but they didn't get my bird seed this time.
Here's what I did once. And, it worked.

First, I got a metal bowl (about 18'; in diameter) at Walmart - it was only a few bucks. Next, I cut a hole in the bottom of the bowl large enough for it to slip over the pole. I then slipped the bowl onto the pole such that it would hang upside down when secured to the pole. I then supported it from underneath with a hose clamp on the bottom of it (I had to wrap a bunch of black tape to form a wider spot on the pole than the hole in the bowl when the clamp was installed).

The idea was that the squirrel would climb up the pole and be stopped by the bowl. If he tried to reach out and climb up to the lip of the bowl, his weight would cause the bowl to tip. This sudden drop and change in level of the bowl would cause him to lose his grip and fall to the ground. The bowl would then return to its balanced position to fend off the next squirrel attempt.

If that isn't feasible to do, you can also get a 4- or 5-inch diameter PVC drain pipe (about 4 feet long) to surround the base of the pole. This is too wide for a squirrel to get his arms around and too slippery for him to dig his nails into. Keep in mind that squirrels do jump well. So, you should also make sure the bird feeder is a good distance away from plants, tree branches, or even walls (they can dig their nails into stucco and other siding materials, and jump to a bird feeder).

Good luck.
put squirrel food on the ground level

x
Put something like vaseline on the pole. Maybe that will stop them. I love them little squirrels but they do eat all the bird seed before the little birdies get any.
Make an inverted cone out of some sheet metal or plastic. It will keep then from climing the pole.

How do you make Hummer Bird Food ? In The Hummer Bird Feeder?

1 part sugar to 4 parts water as some others have already suggested. I like to mix up smaller amounts and change it more often to keep it fresh... rather than filling each feeder up all the way, maybe go half way and then change it out each week or even more often than that.

Simply stir in the sugar until it dissolves completely in the water. There is NO need to boil tap water to kill bacteria- that is a myth. Normal tap water does not have high levels of bacteria unless you've got a major problem with your water. Boiled and Distilled water will also grow mold and bacteria (later as it gets older) that is why it's important to change the nectar regularly. If you want to add red coloring to your nectar that's up to you but I have not found this to be necessary, especially if the feeder already has a lot of red color as an attractant. How do you make Hummer Bird Food ? In The Hummer Bird Feeder?
Do you mean HUMMINGBIRD nectar?

The easiest way, aside from buying it commercially at a store, is to mix 4 parts sterilized water ( to avoid bacteria from harming them) to 1 part sugar ( eg. 1 cut sugar + 4 cups water) and put it in a cheap hummingbird feeder that you can get at Dollarama for a buck OR make your own by filling a plastic bottle and hanging it upside down with a hole in it - not sure how they do that so the nectar doesn't all spill out at once but you can google it and get directions for building them yourself.

Always be careful to resist the urge to give them too much sugar . . . the sweeter the better right? wrong! too much sugar in a concentrated dosage can shut their kidneys down and kill them. So be responsible and enjoy your hummingbirds!!!How do you make Hummer Bird Food ? In The Hummer Bird Feeder?
1 part sugar to 4 parts water. boil the sugar water until all the sugar is dissolved. let it cool down put it in the feeder and add a couple drops of food coloring and there ya go.
1 quart water + 1 cup sugar. Do not add food color....it's not needed and may be bad for them. Keep one feeder out all winter in case of a stray visitor.

The post with the 4 parts water to 1 part table sugar is right. I use hot water and don't boil it. The sugar will melt just the same. Don't use red dye. There is no reason to when the feeder itself is probably bright enough, and there are studies out there that say that the dye is causing tumors. Why take the chance? My feeders have clear nectar, and the birds still feed like crazy. Take a look at this great site....

I put a new bird feeder in my back yard 1 week ago, but have had no birds visit. Why?

I bought this great brass solar bird feeder and hung it on a hook designed for such. It hangs on one side of the yard close to a flower bush. Not one bird has stopped by for lunch. The food I bought is a variety. I can't even get a crow to stop. WHY?I put a new bird feeder in my back yard 1 week ago, but have had no birds visit. Why?
There could be a couple of reasons.

~What type of birds is the food suppose to attract and is it the time of year for those birds to be in your area? Experiment with a few types of bird seed to see what you can attract.

~Is there cats in your area? If the birds knows cats are stalking about, they will not try your bird feeder. One of the most valnurable and likely moments for a predator to capture its prey is while they're feeding

~Does you birdfeeding move rapidly and easily with the wind and/or makes noises?

~Is the feeder near a high traffic area (for people, pets, and/or cars)?

Answering ';yes'; to one or more of these questions means you need to move the feeder, purchase a different one, and/or experiment with different types of food.

Good Luck!I put a new bird feeder in my back yard 1 week ago, but have had no birds visit. Why?
    Cause they don't like u
There are several possibilites. First - it takes time for the birds to find a new feeder, especially if they are already accustomed to others. Second, you may have placed it too close to a bush or other plant from which a predator could potentially attack. Even if YOU know they can't get there, the birds may not realize that. I suggest moving it within reach of a sheltering plant like a tree, but not so close that a predator could hide in it. I'm not sure about the ';solar'; part, or what function that would serve, so I can't speak to that. Since it's brass, it's presumably shiny, and that could theoretically put some birds off.
    are there any cats around?
Be patient. It takes time and once they know it's there they'll return year after year.

Also, if birds of prey are in the area no little bird will venture near...they're to smart for that.
I have bird feeders all through my backyard. I find that if I don't keep the feeders with food in them all the time that the birds will stop coming by. Now I just was able to get out and get these feeders filled just a week ago and it has taken this long for the birds to start coming back. Once they realize the food is there I will be filling th ese about every other day or so.
give them time; it happens to us too. Once one shows up, they'll come in droves. Birds are heavily networked.

Try putting some seed in a dish/paper plate on the ground - that may help get some attention.
Crows eat meat. Put some roadkill in your feeder to attract crows.
It is probably because they don't know about it yet. But when they figure out that it is there, they will come over, trust me. I know it because I have a bird feeder, too.
Hi there. Birds are now appearing slowly as spring approaches. Inspect the area you live in early in the morning. They may come by very soon and establish a routine. My problem is that my cat is very predatory and the birds now avoid my place! I guess the word is out! Weird, huh? Well, don't give up yet and I'm sure they will discover your feeder. Be sure it is high enough so that the birds feel safe enough to approach it. have a great spring.
wait a while....or chage the position where birds can see and smell it
    Hi,

It may take a week or two for birds to locate your feeders. Be sure to keep the seed fresh so that when they find it they will want to come back. It may be better to only put small amounts of seed in your feeders to begin with.

Always use good quality seed such as black-oil sunflower seed.

    Good Luck,

    John

You will get birds to stop and visit. It will just take time. This summer you won't be able to keep it filled.

Do you have an onion bag, made from string netting? If so, just drop it down in that, tie the top and hang on a tree limb, with another strong string. Hang it down from the tree limb, the birds will cling to it, and eat, while the squirrels will have a time, getting to it.

When making sugar water for a humming bird feeder what ratio of water to sugar do you use?

    Hi,

    Very simple recipe:

    1 part sugar

    4 parts water

First, bring the water to a boil and then slowly add the sugar. Let it boil for a few minutes, then remove from the burner to cool. Store any excess nectar in the refrigerator. Yes, it is that easy!

Hummingbirds cannot smell and depend on their eyesight to seek out flowers and food sources. But do not add food coloring to this hummingbird feeder recipe, it is unnecessary and possibly harmful to the birds. Red portals on the feeders, or even a red ribbon on top, will attract the hummingbirds just as well.

JohnWhen making sugar water for a humming bird feeder what ratio of water to sugar do you use?
One part sugar to four parts water. And, you don't need to add red vegetable colouring. They'll accept the clear nectar solution you have made.

I put one cup of sugar in a bowl, and add 4 cups kettle boiled water. Then I stir it until dissolved and put it into the fridge to cool down. You don't want to burn those little tongues! When making sugar water for a humming bird feeder what ratio of water to sugar do you use?
We used to have TONS of hummingbirds where I grew up. We always made simple syrup for them. Generally its one cup of sugar to two cups of water.... boiled breifly... then let to rest until cool.

The only caution... is it attracts ants. LOTS of ants. Make sure you have the feeder hanging somewhere that it can drip and the ants wont be a problem!

If you put a humming bird feeder near other birds feeders will they get along with the hummingbirds?

No, the hummers do not seem to mind the other birds.. and the other birds do not mind them. They WILL however fend off other hummingbirds. If you put a humming bird feeder near other birds feeders will they get along with the hummingbirds?
My hummingbird feeder is near my other bird feeders and I have 3 hummingbirds that come all day.If you put a humming bird feeder near other birds feeders will they get along with the hummingbirds?
Humming birds don't eat seeds other birds don't drink nectar. No problem. Humming birds are too fast anyway.
The hummingbirds will not be bothered by the other birds. Another thing to consider is depending on where you live, you may actually attract other nectar loving birds like orioles.

    Happy Birding, John

I don't know about where to find a design but try to use outdoor paints (last better, house ones bleach easier) you can buy samples in different colours and you should have enough in those. Use a primer(ask in hardware shop) on the wood before you paint anything. Ask they people in the hardware shop if your insure of anything and read the instructions on the primer.

Here's a site telling you lots and how to use the primer properly.

You can copy or print out your design. Size it on a copy machine or printer. scribble on the back for carbon then lay it on your birdhouse and redraw it (push hard it should copy). Paint it with acrylic paints then seal it with varathane spray varnish. It should work fine.

When should I take this down? I haven't seen any squirrels lately but birds are still coming to eat.Time of year to take bird feeder down?
Winter is when the resident birds may need extra help. I usually only put OUT my bird feeder when the weather gets cooler. Sometimes migratory birds stop in on their way south for some extra food, and then through the winter, just the residents are around. I make sure I re-stock with more seed after snowfalls, when it may be harder for them to find their normal diets.Time of year to take bird feeder down?
Bird feeders can and should be left up year round. There's no reason to take them down. Birds will come year round, although you may see different birds at different times of the year.

A birdfeeder will not keep migrating birds from going South for the winter. That's just silly, not to mention ignorant.

Birds benefit from a feeder in the spring when their natural food sources are not yet available. The benefit in the winter when there isn't much natural food available, and the birds will visit your feeder in the spring and fall too. Bear in mind that your feeder is not their sole source of food though. The local birds are visiting neighboring birdfeeders and also spend time looking for natural food sources.
The hummingbird feeders are seasonal if you live in the colder areas..

The other feeders can stay year round it is up to you..

You may be surprised what birds don't migrate. Year round residents are well worth the effort to keep the feeders out for.. In one day I counted 32 different varieties of birds in my yard.. and seeing a flock of cardinals feeding in the snow is something I look forward to every year..

I'm with Cat. We put our bird feeders out in the winter, after the bears

have gone into hibernation, and after the migratory hawks have left.

When it gets real cold, we add suet to the tree where the bird feeders are. This keeps them a little warmer then just filling their belly's
you take down the b feeder when bird migration begins in your area.

So they don't stay, and fly south.

Then after migration is over you can put it back up if you have birds breeds that stay the winter.

Is there a cheap and easy way to make bird feeder ';fat cakes'; for woodpeckers?

you don't even need a recipe! Just follow a few guidelines:

Western bluebirds, chickadees, jays, towhees, warblers, woodpeckers and more will come to your yard for suet treats in all seasons, but I suggest limiting homemade suet treats to winter use. It's far too easy for the stuff to melt or go rancid in warmer months.

Making homemade suet cakes is simply a matter of melting fat down to a pour-easy consistency, adding a few ingredients of your choosing, then pouring the mixture into a mold. The shape of the mold is determined by the type of suet feeder you'll use.

If you are using lard or shortening for homemade suet cakes, adding equal parts of peanut butter flour will help maintain correct consistency of regular suet cakes.

To this warm and pour-able mixture you could add rolled oats, bird seed, cornmeal, raisins, unsalted nuts and anything else you think the birds would enjoy. Then, pour your warm suet 'soup' into the mold (a bread pan where you could slice off bits for your store bought suet feeder, cupcake tins that you could pierce with wire and hang from a tree, etc.) Specialty recipes are at the bottom of this page.

Keep any unused portions in the freezer for up to two months. Is there a cheap and easy way to make bird feeder ';fat cakes'; for woodpeckers?
I save the fat from cooking hamburger and bacon in separate containers, and keep the fats in my fridge until I'm ready to use them. The birds (and sometimes the neighbor's dogs) get the hamburger fat. I use the bacon fat to cook people food in...it's too good to give to the birds! My cardiologist doesn't approve of this, but she's a spoilsport. I fry potatoes in bacon fat, and use it to grill cheese sandwiches in, and other things.

Back to the hamburger fat. I melt it, and then add some (cheap, generic) peanut butter while it's still warm. I have a pine tree in my back yard, and so I have plenty of free pine cones. They aren't the prettiest cones I've ever seen, but they're free. I let the fat and peanut butter mix cool down, and I take a table knife and smear the mix in the spaces between the ';petals'; of the pine cones. The birds don't seem to care if it's the cheap generic peanut butter, they're very glad to get the extra fat in their diet. I buy the generic peanut butter for the birds, and I buy a better quality for people use. I originally bought the generic for people use, but I found that our family doesn't like it.

With my method, you only have to buy the peanut butter, everything else is something that is either a by-product of cooking, or something that I gather from my yard.

If you don't have access to free pine cones, you can pour the peanut butter and fat mix into small shallow cans, like tuna cans, and let it cool. Even though birds' beaks are quite hard, please make sure that the can edges where they've been opened are completely smooth.

I put these fat sources out during the winter, but also during the spring, when I'm sowing grass seed. If I'm sowing seed, then I might add some seed to the cakes, to try to get the birds to eat the stuff I put out for them instead of the seed that I want to grow.Is there a cheap and easy way to make bird feeder ';fat cakes'; for woodpeckers?
You just melt the lard, add raisins, seeds, chopped peanuts, rolled oats etc. Then we pour them into clean bean tins to set then turn them out when cold and put on the bird table. You can also re-use half coconuts if you have any which had been bought commercially filled with fatball mixture.

';Natural Looking';. Thats simple. You need a branch or log. Aquire it from your yard or a park/wildlife area. Make sure to ask permision from the park personel first. It only needs to be 4 inches in diameter and 4 foot in length. Cut it into 3 pieces. Two pieces 1 foot long and one 2 foot piece. Construct it into a U shape. The horizontal piece drill holes in the top and pour seeds into those holes for the seed eating birds. The vertical pieces drill holes in the sides and fill with suet or peanut butter for the woodpeckers, etc. Its that simple and cheap. Good luck to you on your bird photos. How do i make a natural looking bird feeder?
Well, this isn't a sturdy idea but I thought Id share it with you anyway. Super easy and really cool, all you need is a grape fruit, a dowel and a rubber-band or string, Just cut the fruit in half, empty the meat of the fruit, stick it on the dowel like a bowl, place string or rubber-band bellow grapefruit to keep from sliding down the dowel, fill with seed and stick in the yard! The birds enjoy the fruit as well as the seed! Hope you enjoy this fun, easy idea, happy bird watching! LOL
It doesn't take much. Just a piece of 2X8 about 12'; long, hollow out the top inch leaving about a 1/2'; rim around the outside. A couple metal braces under the window or a couple of triangle pieces of wood to brace it. You should add one way film to the window so the birds will not flee from you movement inside. Realize, tho', squirrels tend to have short memories, esp. when there's tasty birdseed to be had. You'll have to keep guard until just the sight of you at the window makes them run.

.How do you deter squirrels away from your plants, party lights, bird feeder ?
To deter squirrels away from plants you can pore some

household ammonia around them but not too close to the

plants itself as even the fumes can burn the plant. It will keep

cats away also as well as dogs away from garbage cans.

Pore a ring of ammonia around the feeder, out far enough

away so as not to interfere with the seeds on the ground.

4 or 5 feet out is ideal. If you are lucky you can watch as a

squirrel moves near, gets a whiff and suddenly turns and

runs like the devil is after it. Cats react differently. They turn

and run a short distance, stop and looks back and then sit

down and proceed to wash there face as if nothing at all

happened. Put a little something out for squirrels as well

and be assured they won't forget what it smells like over

there near the bird feeder. Love all the critters and good luck. How do you deter squirrels away from your plants, party lights, bird feeder ?
You can keep them out of your bird feeder by sprinkling capsiacin power into the bird food. This is the substance that makes chili peppers HOT ! Birds cannot taste it, so it will not effect them, but mammals will be repelled by it.

For the lights and plants they sell granulated animal repellent.

You can find both of these products at farm supply stores. If you cannot find the capsiacin, try using crushed hot chili peppers from the spice section of the supermarket!

    Good luck!
Shoot them. The more you shoot, the less squirrels that can reproduce. Remember these are animals who run infront of cars- their not too bright!

I have inside/outside cats. is there ne way to put up a bird feeder w/o turning the visiting birds into prey?

Using a shepards hook may or may not work. Cats can jump really high from a sitting position.

The Audobon Society asks that all cat lovers keep their cats indoors for this very reason. Cats ';LOVE'; to catch birds.

All Things Considered, January 5, 2007 路 It's possible that the number one killer of American birds is a much-beloved, domestic pet.

Experts say outdoor cats may kill hundreds of millions of wild birds each year -- but they aren't exactly sure how many.

Cats are the biggest killer of birds in a domestic garden situation. If you have a floor standing bird table, place a circle of clematis netting around it (the thick, durable plastic type), small birds can enter, and Cats cannot. If you have a good sized tree, throw a rope over a high branch, and pull the feeder up high (like raising a flag up a pole). Place feeders near dense hedges or shrubs, birds dislike open spaces without escape routes.I have inside/outside cats. is there ne way to put up a bird feeder w/o turning the visiting birds into prey?
The bird houses that stand on top of a pole are the best in my opinion, although you have to use a ladder to refill them. You can also squirrel-proof those. Well, nothing is ever squirrel proof in my book but you can at least make it difficult for them. The feeders that stand on a shepherds hook work well too and you can move them around your yard to see what works best. The key to keep birds that feed on the ground safe is placing the feeder away from shrubbery where cats can lay in wait. Also, songbirds like berry bushes if you can plant those. They always loved my holly bushes but the cats didn't because of their spiny leaves. However, holly can be a real pain and require a lot of pruning.

Female cats are stealthy hunters and despite my efforts, they always manage to bring me back a gift once in a while. That's survival of the fittest.
You might get a shepherd's hook to hang the feeder on, that way it would be too narrow for the kitties to climb it...however, I'm not sure what would stop the birds from eating the feed off the ground.

You should leave your hummingbird feeder up until you don't see any more hummingbirds...maybe 3 more weeks. Hello,

There's no set time as a few hummingbirds have been known to winter in North America in the most unlikely places. You could take you feeders inside by the time your area gets temperatures which would keep the food frozen.

Otherwise, why not try leaving it available in case some stragglers happen by? You never know who you might see!

In Richmond, VA (where I used to live), there were two over-wintering hummingbirds documented in that area during 2004 and 2005. Nicknamed the ';dryer birds'; because each took up a roost near the dryer vent at two suburban homes, they both successfully wintered and survived the cold by staying mostly in the yard and eating from the feeders provided by their (enthusiastic) hosts.

Many birds and animals will drink from a hummingbird nectar feeder. I have seen orioles, woodpeckers and finches at the one in my yard, as well as squirrels and raccoons.

Best way to attract hummingbirds is to have plants that attract them. Here is an excellent site that lists many plants that attract hummers: http://www.hummingbirds.net/attract.htmlI live in Missouri and have a humming bird feeder that I had goten a few to come early in spring.?
    Hi,

I don't think that bugs could eat the hummingbird food so fast that you did not see them. Is is a plastic feeder? Could it be leaking?

If you are having trouble attracting hummers to your feeders, consider creating a natural hummingbird habitat using the flowers, trees and shrubs that hummers love. By learning how to attract hummingbirds you can increase your chances of seeing these wonderful creatures.

Their are squirrels eating out of my bird feeder?

Ok, when i wake up in the morning all i see at my bird feeder is a family of squirrels eating out of it and scaring away all the birds, what do I do about them??Their are squirrels eating out of my bird feeder?
pet stores and hardware stores sell pellets to keep squirrels away.Their are squirrels eating out of my bird feeder?
you can buy what looks like an upside down bowl at the wild bird store, you hook it above the feeder and it keeps squirrels from being able to jump onto the feeder. you can also suspend it in the middle of the yard from a long metal pole so the squirrels cant reach it.
Try putting Vaseline on the pole. Then when the squirrels try to climb it they slide down. It works perfectly and I always use it. It will not hurt them at all it just won't let them climb up.
They make bird feeders that squirrels can't get into. I highly suggest getting these they work great.

I have a bird feeder and pesty cats that kill the birds, how can I get these neighbors cats out of my yard?

Check with animal control to see what the leash law is regarding at-large cats. Make animal control aware of your problem. You should be able to borrow a trap from them.

A cat rescue says that white vinegar sprayed around your yard will keep the cats away, haven't tried it myself. I've pretty well taken care of the cat problem with traps and trips to the humane society.

Your feeders should be a minimum of 5 ft. off the ground. They should be near trees for protective cover and away from shrubs/bushes that could hide predators.

If you're at home during the day, your garden hose can be a great ally, especially if you have good water pressure and nozzle. Cats dislike being wet and you can reach one 12 - 15 ft away with a good stream (not spray) from your hose. Doesn't take long for them to figure out your place is not a convenient snack stop.

You've got a few weapons at your disposal, use them. BTW, your complaint emphasizes the cause of a 20% decrease in the song bird population nationwide, cats.

    edit*********

Poster above is quite correct, NO poisons! The trapping is OK as long as animal control knows about, they appreciate help in controlling cats, at least the ones in my city do.I have a bird feeder and pesty cats that kill the birds, how can I get these neighbors cats out of my yard?
Get a dog and let him sleep under the bird house. : )I have a bird feeder and pesty cats that kill the birds, how can I get these neighbors cats out of my yard?
    Hi,

I was having this problem some time back also. Although my problem was related to birdhouses, I think the same methods can be applied to your bird feeder too. At first I thought the cats were curious at my new birdhouse but then they started attacking the birds !

I found some resources on the net on this problem. This is my what I did, hope it helps.

First, I relocated my bird house to be further away from the trees or any other objects that the cats can use to climb on and leap onto the birdhouse or bird feeder in your case. I used to put the birdhouse beneath a tree so the cats were climbing onto the tree and onto the birdhouse. Situating the birdhouse away from the tree minimized the cats attacks.

Second, I mounted the birdhouse on high metal poles. I went to the hardware store and got them cut to the desired length that I want. Since metal is quite slippery, it makes it hard for the cats to climb to the birdhouse.

Third, for the initial week of making the changes, I noticed the cats were still coming. They are quite persistent aren't they ? My garden has a water jet for flowering the plants. Whenever the cats came near, I shot them with a jet of water. Soon after about a week of doing this, they didn't come anymore since they don't like getting wet that much.

I followed some of the steps in this birdhouse blog I found at How To Build Bird Houses or Buy Birdhouses located at http://www.birdhousendine.com .. maybe you can go there and have a look. Seems like they are going to put up some bird feeder information too.

But whatever you do, do not put out poisons or traps for these cats !
get a shotgun and blow the cats head off. i hate cats as you can probably tell.
call animal control and have it picked up!
Call your city officials - the office where you would purchase a dog license if you had a dog. Ask them what the leash laws are, and if they apply to cats as well as dogs.

If you find it is illegal for cats to be roaming free, then report your neighbor, and have animal control pick the cats up and take them to a shelter, where the owners willl have to pay a fine to reclaim them.

If it is not illegal for cats to roam free, try to get legislation passed to include cats in the leash laws. Otherwise, there isn't much you can do, except continue to chase the cats whenever you see them.
cat repellent and animal shelters that will capture those cats and give them up for adoption..
try hanging the bird feeders higher so the cats can't reach them.
set out cat traps XD!! or make your bird feeder a little higher off the ground. Make it so that the cat's can not reach the birds. That should do the trick.
I have a problem with cats in our neighborhood. Our lease law applies to cats, too, but no one ever reports them. But there are cats that keep spraying a bush by my front porch, which also has birds that sleep in it all night . I finally got pissed and called the county animal control. They brought me a live cage. So far we've caught 2 cats. Animal control comes and picks them up. People get cats and think they are so sweet. They let them outside and they get into all kinds of trouble. If you own a cat, keep the dang thing in the house. Same with dogs. Keep them in your yard or house.
Seriously, cats have been hunting birds long before you or i came along, it's a survival instinct, we all have it... What would you do in order to use yours...The majestical thing about it is; if you have time to feed and watch the birds, take the same interest in how the cat stalks and feeds on the bird...Our inteligence does not exceed the intelligence of what lies right in front of our eyes in the mask of a pet....

Should I leave the bird feeder outside when there's rain or storm?

Is it okay if the bird food gets wet?Should I leave the bird feeder outside when there's rain or storm?
yaShould I leave the bird feeder outside when there's rain or storm?
if the bird feeder is covered it will not hurt however if it is not it will mildew or start growing so the best thing to do if you leave it outside is check to make sure it doesn't go bad
Ya its seeds they wont absorb much if your feeder holds a lot just check every now and then for mold.

Why do hummingbirds visit bird feeder for awhile then leave dont come back?

They can be picky little guys, make sure the bird feeder is really rinsed a lot before you fill it. Even a little soap residue ruins the syrup after a few days.

Another thing might be wasps or stinging insects that are sugar lovers. They are one of the few things a hummingbird is so afraid of that they will abandon a feeder. Another thing is sometimes the syrup gets too old and they don't like it much.

Third and last is that as different flowers, tree and shrubs bloom, the birds may abandon the feeders for nature. Eventually they do return when nature shuts them off and if food is provided. Good luck with your flying jewels. Why do hummingbirds visit bird feeder for awhile then leave dont come back?

Why do hummingbirds visit bird feeder for awhile then leave dont come back?
    they just want the food
If you keep the hummingbird feeder filled with fresh nectar they will come back. Sometimes hummingbirds will perch on things to rest a minute, including feeders that have seeds. They don't eat the seeds, though, so they aren't interested in coming back to that kind of feeder.
The humming birds have very busy lives when the're not feeding. The male humming bird has to build a nest, and then he sings a special song about kathy lee, which attracts the female humming bird. then feathers fly, and beaks go where they shouldn't be. Later on, the male humming bird puts his beak lips together, and calls her back for another night of passion.
The first thing I can think of is the contents may be going stale. Try changing it. Or use a different mix. It could also be they are migrating. It depends where you are located.
    I think they return
There are all kinds of different kinds of humming birds.Jus t to have them feed on it means they are in the area but the number of them depends on your area. they come in different colors depending on where you live.

I live on 10 acres near a wooded area and next to a mountain and they feed alot here not having too many houses right next to each other.

If you seen them in your area but only once in awhile then the population is low for them in that area.they are all most impossiable too see until they slow down right in front of you.

We have a feeder and its empty by the time winter rolls around

I bought a book on birds in north america and it gave me a map of what kind of and how big the population is in the area.Try used book store or library if you don't want to buy a new book .
Hummingbirds need lots of high energy feed. If a hummingbird finds your feeder empty - it is not likely to return, they can't afford to waste energy looking for a feeder -- if you want the hummingbirds to return - make sure your feeder never goes empty.

seed feeding birds will return after a find a feeder empty, but hummingbirds most likely will not return -they will look for another source.
Hummingbirds migrate, soooo, you'll see them hang out for a couple of weeks, then they are gone. They also visit other feeders and ';do the rounds'; Also, are you making sure you are changing the water and cleaning your feeder??

No! I don't know where these other people got their education but they don't know much about animals!! Birds that eat seed are different from the bug eaters,,just look at how their beaks are shaped!! If you hang seed feeders you will get seed eaters,,, you need to entice bug eaters in a different way. They will indeed eat the crickets..IF SEEN..the problem is crickets generally stay out of the heat of the day and come out at night..most stay under debris/boards/rocks/or under the house in the day time...So you will not notice that much of a decline...cats will eat more of the crickets than birds(yes cats love bugs) for cats are night loving animals..
it depends. sometimes the birds will go for the crickets but usually they just eat the seed. i cant remember what likes eating crickets. i think frogs. but if you get alot of birds im pretty sure the neighbourhood cats will hang around your place alot
Probably not. I have 3 bird feeders, all with different seed to attract different birds and they seem to care a whole lot more about the seed. I hear crickets all the time too.

We have a MAJOR Sparrow problem at my bird feeder?

I think the sparow population around my house has at least doubled in the past few years! they ate 20lb of bird seed in less than 3 days!! and it's all mostly sparrows! at one point i counted at least 50 sparrows on or underneath the bird feeder eating the seed! we used to have so many different species of birds, but now all i mostly see r just sparrows! i mean i like the little guys, but i mean this is just ridiculus!!

i'm not quite sure how to get rid of them, i don't want to trap or kill any of them, i just want them to find another food source, like maybe is there a type of seed or bird food that doesn't attract them?? any advice would be great! We have a MAJOR Sparrow problem at my bird feeder?
Sparrow are opportunity feeders, and will eat just about anything. I cannot think of any bird food that they would not eat.

I also doubt that you would be able to trap all the sparrows in your area! They are usually the most prolific of birds in any given area.

You could try to attract additional types of birds by putting out special types of foods. I have seen finch food ( Mostly black Niger thistle seed), cardinal food, songbird food, and more. Check a farm supply store for a good selection.

Good luck!We have a MAJOR Sparrow problem at my bird feeder?
You can put up different types of feeders to attract different birds: hummingbird feeder, a suet feeder to attract woodpeckers, etc. and put up a thistle feeder to attract finches. Even if you still offer the same seeds on a platform feeder this will help to bring in doves and maybe some other bird species. But, if you are going to provide food for the birds..you cannot JUST feed the birds you want to..as long as you put out food, ANY and ALL birds will come and eat it. Sure you can try and deter some..but you will not eliminate all of the sparrows from feeding. Also, keep in mind if these are any sparrows other than House Sparrows they are protected by law and harming them in anyway (trapping them, etc.) would be illegal.
Move the bird feeder about 5 feet every other day away from the previous spot, then place it in a new spot. If you don't want to lose a bird feeder take it out for about a month then put it back in.

Use seed that squirrels dislike. Safflower seed, Niger thistle, White millet seed and suet cakes for example. This is the most humane method. Another humane approach would be to put some kind of baffle on the pole or wire to prevent the squirrel from climbing to the feeder. Or just buy a squirrel-proof feeder. All these solutions can be bought at your local pet store.

Cayenne Pepper - Industrial strength and in copius amounts.

We mix the pepper with the bird seed. The birds don't taste it, the squirrels take off like they are on fire!!! LOL!!!!

    Tennis balls for target practice.
We have squirrels at our feeder, but they stay on the ground. Get a plastic jug that drinking water came in, from an office or Culligan man, etc. Mount the jug under the feeder and they won't be able to climb up from the ground.
put the bird feeder up high. and put spikes on the pole.
Lay peanuts or black walnuts further away from the bird feeder for the squirrels and use bird food without any type of nuts or sunflower seeds in the feeder.
I SAY LEAVE THEM ALONE AN THEM EAT TO!!! YA KNOW THEY GET HUNGRY TOO!! I'D LOVE IT IF SQUIRRELS CAME TO MY BIRD FEEDER, I HAVE TO MAKE THEM THEIR OWN FEEDER IN ORDER TO GET THEM TO COME AN EAT!
live trap them and then dround the tree rats. that is how we solved the damage they casued to my garden.
air soft, dont shoot at em just near em, he he he
get used to squirrels---they are clever little buggers and will usually work out a solution whatever you do--or.... 12 bore shotgun ?!!
I trap them in a live trap and take them to a park at least 1 mile from the house to release them. If you release them to close to your house, they will return.
    Several solutions:

Water guns (they come back eventually tho).

Have the feeder on a metal pole that has been painted with anti climb pain (messy and need replenishing)

Squirrel proof feeders, these are heavy duty steel consctructs that even a squirrel cant get through (expensive)

Put bird feeder on a wooden pole place a transformer (from the inside of a walkman charger etc) and a nine volt battery at the top and have 2 paralel wires running from the transformer to near the base of the pole. when the squirrel touches both wires with it's feet it gets a small shock pretty much like a cattle fence (might be missing something here it's been a while since I made one) :)

Is there such a thing as a squirrel proof bird feeder?

Rub Vaseline on the pole holding the feeder so they can't climb up.Is there such a thing as a squirrel proof bird feeder?
not really, lol. every time they make a squirrel proof bird feeder, nature makes a better squirrel.

my retired dad likes to sprinkle seads on the driveway couple of times a day so the squirrel has to walk around and gather them slowly, giving the birds more time to pick them up from around the squirrel.

at one point he nailed a dish onto a platter and set that on a very high metal pole so that squirrels can't jump on it or climb on it, but they found a way to climb or jump up after about 6 months.
There are all kinds. Try the link below for more info.
Who cares. Even if their was, just let the poor squirrel get a share too. :(

They just take the bird seed %26amp; bury it.

    First it would have to be of all metal construction;

mounted away from any tree branches in jumping distance.

Then you'd need a baffle on the mounting pole.

I put a separate squirrel feeder with peanuts in it.

Then we saw a Blue Jay lifting the lid %26amp; eating them.
Yes there is. Here's a link with lots of different designs that are all squirrel proof.

Any ideas? My kids are 4 and 3, I'm looking for a simple and easy way to build a birdhouse and or bird feeder with them?
Make a pinecone bird feeder! My preschool students love making these and they can do it with little help!

Get a pinecone and tie a long string to the top. Roll it or spread vegetable shortening or lard (Crisco works well) on the pinecone. You can then roll it in birdseed, cornmeal or uncooked oats (cover it well). You can also use chopped up dried fruit, chopped nuts, seeds (Birds love sunflower seeds!). Hang it on a tree outdoors and watch the birds come!

Here are some steps to take and pictures of how it may look http://www.enviro-explorers.com/pinecone鈥?/a>

    DLTK's Crafts for Kids

    Bird House Craft; Materials:

3 boxes 1 large box (roughly square) to make the roof

1 slightly smaller box for the walls and floor

1 chocolate box for the base

cardboard roll from paper towel or gift wrap

    scissors or utility knife

tape (preferably packing tape or masking tape as opposed to scotch tape.)

OPTIONAL: String to hang the house instead of the third box and paper towel roll.

    OPTIONAL: Paint

    Instructions:

Begin with the larger box. We used a box from mandarin oranges. Cut out two sides or the top flap and one side keeping the corner intact. The idea is that the fold between the two sides will become the peak of the bird house.

Take the second box and cut it to form the walls. We let Kaitlyn draw the size of the hole she wanted for her bird house and then cut that out as well.

Tape the roof to the second box. Depending on how big the hole is you may be able to reach in and tape it from the inside.

Tape the paper towel roll to the bottom of the bird house.

Cut a small 'X' in the lid of the third box about the same size as the paper towel roll.

Slide the paper towel roll through this 'X' in the lid and then tape it to keep it standing. As you can see from the picture, Darren did not scrimp on the tape and he managed to make it strong enough to stand up on its own.

OPTIONAL: You could use string to hang the house as an alternative to the stand.

OPTIONAL: Paint the bird house and stand.
    What you need:

Empty rinsed out milk carton - quart or individual size

    Construction paper

Moss or Excelisor (fake moss) both at craft stores

    Artificial flowers and greenery

    Little sticks from your yard

    Scissors

    Tacky Glue

    Hot Glue

    Stapler

Little bird (optional - also found at craft store)

Ribbon or Christmas Ornament hanger (optional)

    What you do:

First staple shut the top of the carton. If this is a quart carton, cut about 1/3 off the sides and get rid of bottom. Fold the front and back to form a new bottom. Be sure to crease where you fold and glue.

Pick brown, tan, or shade of green construction paper. First cut the paper to cover the top (roof line) sides and bottom. Glue on with tacky glue. Cut paper to cover front and back. Glue with tacky glue. Draw a circle for the door on the front. Carefully poke a hole and use scissors to cut out hole.

Take the Moss (Excelsior works better**) and form to fit one side of the roof. When you have the size right, glue on with hot glue. Continue the same to the rest of the roof, back and sides. When you prepare the front be sure not to cover up the hole! Do not glue any on the bottom.

Next take your little sticks (twigs) from your yard. They will lay across the roof. Cut them to fit. They can be alittle bend. They don't all have to be straight. Hot glue these on the roof. Glue the thickest one on the top of the roof. Take one stick and poke a hole beneath your door. This will be the perch.

Take your greenery and cut little clusters or single leaves off. Place these where ever you want, just not too many. Hot glue these on. They can even be put on the roof.

Now do the same with the flowers. Try to cover up leaf stems with flowers. Again, don't use too many. Cover up flower stems with a single leaf and tuck under flower a little.

If you bought the little bird, hot glue his little feet to the stick perch or put him peeking out the door. Or even on the ROOF! Maybe get Mom and Dad birds.

If mom has a inside tree or a good place to hang this house. Poke a hole in the top of the roof and thread through the ribbon or use the ornament hanger.

It took me about an hour to make this with a small single size milk carton. I took more time trying different places for the leaves and flowers than anything else!
Instead of building a birdhouse I would buy an already made one at Michael's or another craft store and paint it. That's what I did with my kids and it was really fun. I've also taken a plain birdhouse and covered it in peanutbutter and birdseed and the birds loved that.

How can I keep squirrels off of our bird suet feeder?

We have a suet feeder for birds.

We get all kinds of wild birds, but the suet is expensive, and we keeps getting squirells climbing up our deck, and onto the feeder and eating all the suet.

My dad wants to shoot them, or put them in a have-a-heart trap and drop them off a mile away.

But I don't agree with either of those plans.

Is there anything NATURAL we can do to repel the squirrels? How can I keep squirrels off of our bird suet feeder?
lol. For fun my husband and I spray the feeders with PAM or put vaseline on them for a cheaper alternative. It only works for a little bit but they cannot get up the feeder and if they do they fall off. Not only do they stay off the feeder but it is really funny to watch.

I love birds (I have three of my own) and the squirrels get annoying (although I find them cute - NOT on the feeder). How can I keep squirrels off of our bird suet feeder?
Hang the feeder where it is not possible for the squirrels to climb to it. The birds will still be able to hang on it and eat.
Use red pepper in the suet (I make my own). The squirrels don't like it, but it doesn't seem to bother the birds.

Try to catch it by throwing a towel over it and keep it in a cage for now. Then, post posters or ask neighbors if they have lost a parakeet. If you cannot find the owner, then keep it.

    Good luck!

Check out Kibibi's Lost and found map. You can type your address in the 'Goto Address' box and see if anyone is missing one in your neighborhood. You can also add it to the map if you want in case someone goes there looking for it.
Set up a trap that does not kill. See if you can keep it after that.

What is the difference between a hummingbird feeder and a regular bird seed feeder/?

I actually saw a hummingbird around y new bird feeder, but it didn't go for the seeds! What is the difference between a hummingbird feeder and a regular bird seed feeder/?
Hummingbird feeders are liquid feeders, you put sugar water in them, birdseed feeders are for solid food (birdseed)What is the difference between a hummingbird feeder and a regular bird seed feeder/?
HUMMINGBIRDS DON'T FEED FROM REGULAR BIRD SEED FEEDERS. THEY DRINK NECTAR. A HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER IS FULL OF A RED JUICE THAT'S MIXED WITH WATER, SUCROSE AND OTHER VITAMINS FOR THEM. THERE WINGS GO SO FAST THAT THEY DRINK BASICALLY STRAIGHT SUGAR TO KEEP THEM GOING.
Hummingbirds eat nothing but sweet nectar. They will sip on sugar water in a hummingbird feeder. They are highly attracted to the color red. That's why most feeders are red.
if you want to get a hummingbird feeder, you need to boil up some hummingbird ';nectar';. Recipe: 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. Once cooled....you can start feeding hummingbirds. Keep in mind you must change the water minimum once weekly...I change mine every 3-4 days. It can ferment and get the birds ';drunk'; and could kill them. You have to be careful in hot weather as it will ferment faster. Good Luck.
Geez, hummingbirds want nectar (a liquid).
    they don't eat seeds

Hang it on a shepherd's hook, available at your home and garden shop. That way you can watch them feed. I have a couple right outside my window, together with a bird bath, and spend hours watching them. If you want to attract finches, plant you a couple of fir trees, they love them. Can I hang a bird feeder on a shed?
Certainly you can. I will say though, without trees you may not get many birds. If you are wanting American Goldfinches attach a yellow ribbon to the feeder. That will draw them in. I would recommend a thistle feeder for finches.
sure. as long its about 6 feet off the ground to keep cats at bay.

Another trick is adding powdered (cayenne) pepper to the bird seed. Peppers do not bother the birds at all (actually beneficial). The squirrels, however, hate it so they will eventually leave the feeder alone.
Cover the pole in vaseline. The animals then can't climb up the pole to the bowl. Plus it won't hurt the animals.

How to keep the squirrels out of bird feeder?

There is a device available that is weight sensitive and when a squirrel jumps onto the the feeder, the feeder starts spinning. Evenutally the squirrel loses interest because of all the spinning and falling off (usually no injuries) and they go elsewhere for dinner. Saw it on AFV on tv and then in a catalog. Personally, I would rather watch the squirrels eat and let the birds eat what is left. How to keep the squirrels out of bird feeder?

How can we get birds to come pay us a visit?!How can I advertise my bird feeder?
Put it in a higher place away from predators. How can I advertise my bird feeder?
Birds aren't really scared of houses, so the location you have it in is fine. I would consider hanging it up in a tree, or a large bush instead of leaving it on a table. If it's up in a tree it's less flying they'd have to do then flying down to the table and then flying back up. I would only put birdseed inside of it. Too much stuff at one time could be too cluttered, and maybe even too messy.

    Hope this helps!
Keep food there all the time, and fresh water. They will come when they feel safe. Perhaps you have cats wandering in your yard. That will make the birds fear coming there. Otherwise it just takes time. Ours are eating us out of house and home, and we are not offering scones!

Yours is very close to the house, but they will get used to it in a bit.
wait for summer time because most birds fly away for the winter... Your bird feeder sounds REALLY COOL !!!!!!! : D

you should probably keep it more far away from the house, or else the birds might get too scared or whatever other reason. Keep it around around your house, not too far, not too close. maybe put it somewhere shady and/or near trees. it should work.

How do you keep bees from getting in your humming bird feeder

Last summer a reader of my column and I worked together on an experiment to keep bees, wasps, and yellowjackets away from the hummingbird feeder. It worked!

Put the regular hummingbird solution in a small container - an old saucer or jar lid. We used a peanut butter jar lid.

We placed the jar lid on the ground quite close to the feeder until the undesirable insects found it and started feeding from it. At first, each day we moved the lid a short distance from the feeder. As more insects came to the ground feeder, we moved it farther away, sometimes twice a day. They followed, seeming to prefer feeding on the ground.

Once this reliable source of nectar was established, we had few, if any, insects at the hummingbird feeder. And the hummingbirds never went to the insect feeder.

I suggest the insect feeder be placed on a stone or brick to prevent anyone accidentally stepping on it and getting stung.

http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/site/h鈥?/a>How do you keep bees from getting in your humming bird feeder
You can buy a bee guard at the store; it is a screen that fits over the spout. Hummingbirds' beaks can reach the nectar, but a bee's shorter proboscis can't.

Or maybe you could make one.

How Do I Build A Bell Bird Feeder?

You could get a empty milk cartoon cut a square out of it so the bird can fit and put bird food in it and hang it with some string onto a tree

Bird Feeder vs. Squirrel ... how can we outsmart the little innocent squirrel from reaching the bird feeder?

Over the past couple years, I've got my parents squirrel proof bird feeders.

One birdfeeder, the one built for the small birds to fly into the steel grate, the squirrels are able to reach into the bird feeder and use their claws to flick out bird seed. It's not easy for the squirrel, because they have to hang on while using just one claw to pick at the seeds.

The milk jug theory doesn't seem to work; they just plow past them.

I will also be accepting pictures of your ideas. Send photos to holykrapbatman@inbox.com and include your Yahoo Answers ID, so I can match it up to your post in here.

Please help the little birds keep their birdseed, and let's shut down the free trade of seed to the these militant squirrels.

Thanks in advance for your help and expertise.Bird Feeder vs. Squirrel ... how can we outsmart the little innocent squirrel from reaching the bird feeder?
Buy squirrel proof bird seed instead.

Hot peppers produce a chemical called capsaicin to make them hot. Birds don't have the taste receptors to detect it, but squirrels do, so bird seed that has been treated with it will be appatizing to the birds, but too hot for the squirrel.Bird Feeder vs. Squirrel ... how can we outsmart the little innocent squirrel from reaching the bird feeder?
I have found that a 22 or high powered air gun will usually do the trick.
On the pole make yourself an inverted funnel about 2 feet in diameter. the squirrels can climb up to it but can't crawl over the funnel. they will fall off
Squirrels are smart. but people are supposed to be smarter, right? Wrong, they will defeat just about every means that you can think of except one. Put the bird feeder on a pole, away from trees and other things that squirrels can jump from. The feeder should be about six feet from the ground as well. Now comes the fun part. Smear Vaseline on the pole and check this out every week depending on the weather. This is very entertaining to and watch the little beasts try and climb the pole. The Vaseline doesn't hurt them either. I'm not into hurting animals, but this will help until some really smart one decides to roll around in some sand and then, you're back to square one. Hope this helps. If nothing else, at least the squirrels are fun to watch as well.
I hate to burst your bubble but, You cant. I know that is not the answer that your looking for and surely not going to be the best. However some time ago I watched a nature show that tried to do this and they got very elaborate with thier designs and while some took longer than others sooner or latter the bushy tailed rats figured them all out.
My dad bought a plastic dome to put over the feeder and suspended the feeder from a tree branch so it was not near the house or fence. The poor squirrels jump on it and slide right off...they're okay...and learned not to even try now.
We always used to use one of those cheap party platters made out of aluminum on the post of a feeder that sat in the ground away from the trees so the squirrels couldn't jump onto it. Just cut a hole in the center and thread it onto the post, using a piece of PVC piping to cover the feeder pole (this helps prevent rust, too) and hold it in place. I have also heard that if you mix pepper into your birdseed it will deter squirrels because they can taste it while the birds cannot. We have also employed a supersoaker shot from the back porch to ';train'; the squirrels to stay off our feeder. You have to spend a lot of time for this to work, though. Another thing you can do is set up a squirrel feeder on the other side of your yard from the bird feeder. Just attach a piece of wood with a long nail sticking out of the center to a tree or fencepost and stick feed corn on it. The squirrels will take the easy way out. Good luck!
I bought a plastic panda toy from Toys 'R Us for about $8 and put it on the stantion that the birdfeeder hangs on. It seems to work most of the time. I believe the people down the street have a plastic crocodile. They seem to shy away from the panda; also, it makes it more difficult for them to reach the feeder.

Try bee hives...My humming bird feeder is overrun with bees how do I get rid of them/?
The problem is with the design of the feeder.

The feeders that have short feeding stations and that are larger than necessary will have this problem. I have two feeders within 10 feet of each other. One has large openings and bees can even crawl into the opening and into the nectar reservoir. The other feeder the feeding outlets are quite small and the bees can not reach the nectar save for a drop or two that the birds may leave at the edge of the opening.

Best advice is buy a better quality feeder and remember that if you can find one with small openings it will help.
well you can even do this or that you can call the bugg people and git rid of them or you can do this run the whose on them and run! don't answer #1 sound moch better lol bye

Take a 2 litre plastic pop bottle and cut an upside down T about 3/4 of the way up the bottle on both sides. Make it one inch long and high. Gently push the flaps inward, you now have a triangle looking shape. Don't push them in too far just leave a small opening enough for the bee to crawl in. Punch two small holes in the cap and thread a string through to hang it up. Fill the bottle with a can of cola. The bee's are attracted to the pop, they crawl in and can't get out
    Bee guards on the openings.
you could kill all the bees in the whole world, a little drastic i know but i feel its the only way to be sure that thay won't return!

Or buy a can of raid.

Can i make a bird feeder out of clay?

will it hurt the birds? Can i make a bird feeder out of clay?
Yes you can make one out of clay. If it is clay that gets fired in the oven it should be very hard and likely fine for the birds.

Is it bad to put a birdhouse near a bird feeder?

I want to put a birdhouse in near a bird feeder. I don't know much about birds so i'm wondering if putting the two close to each other might cause problems between the birds in the house and the birds at the feederIs it bad to put a birdhouse near a bird feeder?
I'd keep some distance between the two. Depending on what species may use your birdhouse and what species visit your feeder, aggressive territorial nesting birds might drive other birds away from the feeder, or aggressive birds visiting the feeder might prey on eggs or young birds in the birdhouse. Is it bad to put a birdhouse near a bird feeder?
Putting the birdhouse too close to a food source will attract predators to it. Put them in separate areas if you don't want the eggs or baby birds to be eaten.
Most birds will not tolerate others in their nesting territory. I would put them at the opposite yard sides and even better if they are not in sight of the other.
  • Fish
  • What kind of camera would be good to put at outside bird feeder to warch birds on inside tv?

You'll need one that's waterproof and weatherproof. It will be much cheaper and easier if you can put the camera indoors, looking out of a window.

How do you deter a Peregrine Falcon from attacking birds at a bird feeder / also do they see color?

I somehow doubt its a peregrine falcon at your feeder, more likely a sharp-shinned hawk/cooper's hawk/ merlin as they are relatively more common than the peregrine and are often found raiding bird feeders. You can't do much but remove their own food source for a while which means taking your feeder down, something which you don't want to do as it will cause more problems to the birds using them right now. You have to realize tough they aren't going to kill every bird at your feeders, they just want to eat as well, if that involves a sparrow now and then you should just consider yourself lucky to see such a great bird around your property.

Just so you can take here are pics of the species I mentioned.

If it is truly a Peregrine at your feeder, I would think you would be terribly excited to have it! It's not very often that one gets to see a Peregrine, especially at a feeder. Also remember, it's a BIRD feeder, and Peregrines are birds. You're feeding up the food chain, and it's not necessarily a bad thing.

If you seriously do not want raptors at your feeder, I suggest providing more shelter around the feeder for the birds that use it. They will be able to escape to nearby bushes and plants faster than the predator can get them. You can either move the feeder or plant more vegetation in the ground or in pots around the feeder.

All diurnal (day-active) raptors have color vision. Also raptors can see UV, a trait that helps them track prey (mouse urine shows up in UV light).
