a little soap %26amp; water is fine. A better choice would be baking soda %26amp; water, or vinegar in water. whatever your choice just rinse really well to get off whatever you cleaned with. Fill the feeder with haot water and add a handful of rice (uncooked) it acts like mini scouring pads..now gently shake the feeder..it should be cleaner now.
Denture cleaner, works good on vases too.
