What is a good mixture or recipe for a humming bird feeder?

I would like to make my own humming bird mixture but am a little concerned. I have heard that mildew can kill the birds.

What is a good mixture for them? Is honey or syrup better than sugar? What is a good mixture or recipe for a humming bird feeder?
4 parts water, 1 part white sugar.

Do not use anything but regular sugar. Honey is poisonous to hummers. Do not use food coloring, there are studies showing that it is causing internal tumors. Your feeder is bright enough.

Change the liquid at least once a week. Wash the feeder with hot water and a scrub brush, no soap. Some soaps leave behind odors that hummers don't like, and if you don't get all of it off, you will make them sick.

Hang the feeder high enough that cats can't get them, and in a cool spot. A little sun won't hurt, but more sun means the liquid will spoil quicker. Hummers don't care how close to a window you put it, as long as there isn't a lot of movement right behind the glass.

The more feeders you put out, the more hummers you will get. They are very territorial, so if one is feeding at one feeder, he can't scare away a hummer on a different feeder.

Have fun! What is a good mixture or recipe for a humming bird feeder?
1 part sugar to 4 parts water. So 1/2 cup sugar to 2 cups water etc. you don't need food coloring.Store any unused food in the refridge for up to 2 weeks. I boil the water and sugar solution and let it cool down before filling the feeder. I also have noticed that this time of summer the birds are less frequent at the feeders because of all the flowers in bloom that they are getting nectar from.
I think that you should just use sugar and water, but you have to change it every day so that the hummingbirds won't die from poising.
I always put sugar in some water, alot, and boil it, let it cool and they love it!
Hummingbird food is really easy to make. What I do is boil some water and pour it in a bowl. Then, just keep mixing in sugar until it no longer disolves. Thats when you know that you have enough. Food coloring is not necessary, especially if the feeder you are using is colorful.

Yes, mildew is bad for birds. It is important to keep your humming bird feeder clean. Wash it every time you change the food with soap, but make sure you rinse it out really well as soap can also kill the birds. You will know if your humming bird feeder gets too moldy, because it will smell awful! Especially watch out for mold and mildew during the summer, when the hot weather makes it grow faster.

Its so great that you want to help the birds in your neighborhood. Many hummingbirds travel a long ways while they migrate, many times food is scarce for them. You are definatly helping they survive, and making their trip a bit easier by providing food.
I use sugar and water. I also put in a little red food coloring.

The only reason I put in the color is because the store bought kind is pink.

If you warm it up, the water will dissolve the sugar better.
