I just bought a hummingbird feeder what do i put in it? I think it is water and sugar but not sure. is it that? If so how much of sugar do i put in it with how much water? it is a small apple shape feeder? Also where do i set it?
Thanx for ur help!! :)What do I put in a humming bird feeder?
Hi Hon, Take three parts/cups water to one part/cup sugar and heat to boiling. Cool and fill the feeder everyday.
You can store the rest in fridge and use it as you need it.. You must clean and refill everyday. It can make them sick if you don`t.
You don`t need to make it red. I`m sure some part of the feeder is already red.. They are attracted to the color red. I hang a piece of red ribbon by mine. Some of that stuff that makes it red also is not good for them.. ONE more thing. They will come back every year and be depending on you for food.. So if you don`t want to do this long term I would rethink it..
Hang it where YOU can see it.. They are truly awesome, funny, acrobatic and worth the work..
Good Luck and God bless {:-)

You can buy a mix that has directions at the store, it also has a pretty red color that also attracts the birds. You can make your own too, I would try 1 part sugar to 2 parts water. Make sure to hang it in a high, quiet place. They are timid and won't come if it's too loud. You also don't want cats getting them when they are eating so higher is better. Ants will try to get it if they can also. It's good to check and make sure it hasn't molded over time as well once you fill it, you don't want to make the birds sick. Hope that helps. Enjoy, they are really fun to watch.
Preparing the Syrup Solution
The hummingbird solution is simple to make. It consists of 1 part white sugar and 4 parts water. Use only table sugar, not artificial sugar (Equal or Sweet and Low) or honey.
In a medium size pot, add the 4 parts water.
Stir in the 1 part sugar.
Bring the solution to a boil over low heat. This is important; it kills mold spores and bacteria and reduces chlorine and fluorine that may be in the water. Hummingbirds are known to avoid solutions that contain chemicals.
Boil for only 2 minutes. Over boiling will make the solution too strong.
Allow it to cool. Then place in feeder. Any unused portion can be refrigerated and used later.
If this is your first hummingbird feeder and you are not sure how many hummingbirds will use the feeder, don't fill it up all the way. Only add a small amount of solution. This will help reduce wasted solution and cleaning. Once the hummingbirds have begun to use the feeder regularly, add more solution to the feeder.
you may get some at walmart too.
hang it from a window or buy a hook and place it there. you can also put bledding hearts around it so they feed off them also.
and do NOT be feeding the hummers KOOLAID yes they are attrracted to red but that sugar will kill them.
simple fix just make some kool-aid any kind and put it in the feeder. as to where......any tree or porch so you can watch them. they will find it anywhere. also remember to bring in the feeder during winter
Red koolade is a great humming bird feed
Sugar water -- you must use real sugar, no substitutes!
you can buy some powder that looks like kool-aid from the store or pet store.or you could make some by mixing water and sugar together and mayby food coloring
four parts water to one part sugar.
ex: 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup of sugar
stir until it completely dissolves. increase the quantity in equal parts. if you are going to put 2 cups of water put 1/2 of sugar.
Here's the recipe for artificial nectar (syrup):
Use one part ordinary white cane sugar to four parts water.
It's not necessary to boil the water. The microorganisms that cause fermentation don't come from the water; they are transported to the feeder on hummingbird bills.
Store unused syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
This mixture approximates the average sucrose content (about 21%) of the flowers favored by North American hummingbirds, without being so sweet it attracts too many insects.
The red koolaid is really just because it is red, in which a hummingbird is attracted to that color.
