I have young corn growing beneath my bird feeder. Should I just weed the flowerbed or let the corn grow? Is it ok for human consumption? Can I cultivate it for future bird seed?Is it ok to eat corn that grows beneath a bird feeder?
If it is indeed sweet corn, I'm sure the bird poo would act as a nice fertilizer....and it would be edible. farmers put a lot worse on produce. And it's corn its inside a husk protected. If it's field corn better have a lot of salt and butter. Is it ok to eat corn that grows beneath a bird feeder?
What looks like corn growing beneath the feeder is probably not sweet corn as you know it. Bird food contains close relatives of corn such as milo, which produces far more small seed suitable for wild birds. Milo produces a nearly identical stalk and leaves as sweet corn, but you'll see the difference when it comes time to flower and produce its grains. If it is true corn in the mix, again, it's not sweet corn. This is feed corn, the kind used to grind cornmeal or feed to livestock. It's not sweet and really starchy, the kernels covered in a thick coat.
But if you do let these grow out anyway, these unique grains make great fall decorations indoors and out.
its ok yes, its not going to harm you.. But its field corn... not sweet corn. there is a big difference. One tastes good and the other does not. give it a shot though, what do you have to lose? and yes, you can cultivate it for future use. most birdseed though is made from crushed corn. throw it in a bag and beat it with a hammer, making it easier for sparrows and such to consume. you can also put little tabs of butter and some salt out there in case its not tastey enough for the little guys. they will thank you.
If the corn seed came from the birdseed, it is field corn, not sweet corn. It is edible when young, but it doesn't taste very good. Don't bother trying to eat it.
One corn plant won't produce a decent ear of corn. It won't pollinate well and if it does produce an ear, it will have a few scattered kernels. So basically it's a waste of time. Weed it out.
that is probably grain feed for cows and such.you want the sweet corn variety
id weed whack it myself
for Future bird sed yes but i don't know if i would eat it myself??? it might be ok but is it worth it?
