Is it safe to catch wild birds at the bird feeder and feed them to my snakes?

Can the wild birds harm the snakes in anyway? Like disease or whatever. They seem to enjoy the birds so far.Is it safe to catch wild birds at the bird feeder and feed them to my snakes?
Provided you are not trapping and feeding illegal birds though I doubt there are many endangered species that you would be catching and feeding.


The gastric juices in the snakes digestive tract is good enough to destroy most any bacteria/disease that a bird might have or carry.


The biggest threat to a snake would be yard dirt that you might bring into the house and introduce to your snakes container.


As I understand it you can use yard dirt after you put it in a pan and bake it in an oven at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes so to kill any parasites that might inhabit the dirt that might burrow it's way into the skin of the snake.





Don't let those ';squimish'; tree huggers get under your skin. These are merely people who don't understand the cycle of life. If you weren't catching these birds to feed to your snake,there would be another snake out there in nature getting them anyway.

That is illegal and if you are caught there is a fine and possible jail time with it. Birds are protected animals and what you are doing is also humanely wrong and punishable by cruelty to animals also. I am a wildlife rehabber I will report you to the proper authorities. Feed the snake the way it is supposed to be fed. And yes could give the snake many diseases that it may have or if it has been poisoned could also posion the snake. This is sadistic and cruel and I think you should not own a pet of any kind. .Shame on you.......

No its not safe to feed anything that has been living in the wild to your snake.


It is illegal in many places to live feed snakes for starters- but a live bird can definately do some damage.


Even if you are killing the birds before you feed them to the snakes there are numerous things your snakes can catch off the birds like mites, lice, and diseases- you dont know what these birds have!


This is why you should only feed your snakes store brought feeder food from animals that have been specially bred and kept in conditions so they dont have any diseases or bugs that will harm your reptiles.

yes it could do serious damage to your snakes as disease is common (thats the way most wild birds die) but if you catch a bird that is protected then you could be fined $1000 + by the government mice are cheap and easy to find at pet shops, you can ask around to see what is the best food.


i really hate to say this (if an animal lover is reading this turn away!), but mice are just as amusing to watch then birds (they fight more lol)

NO. They could be diseased. Do you kill them first? If so, are you killing them humanely? If not, feeding live prey to snakes is cruel, and dangerous for caged snakes too.





Just buy good old frozen rats from the pet store...
