How do you persuade a cat to stay away from the bird feeder?

My bird feeders are located near bushes/tree in order to provide them with a safe place to fly back and forth from. A neighbour's cat has discovered this and is laying in wait under the bush. I'm looking for a safe yet effective way to discourage the cat from hiding under the bush. thanksHow do you persuade a cat to stay away from the bird feeder?
Since it is your neighbour's cat my red neck instinct was to kill it. However, in our civilized world where the neighbour's cat has more rights the homesteader, I would recommend moving the bird feeder away from the trees and possibley raising its height. There are shields you can put on the pole to stop the cat from jumping up at the feeder similar to squirrel guards. If you leave the feeder by the trees the cat will eventually figure out another method to the hunt. How do you persuade a cat to stay away from the bird feeder?
Stick it up on a pole so the cate can;t get to it. Also - they sell those automatic sprinkles that work light motion detector lights, and come on when something crosses its path. You could try that too,.
We have both cats and bird feeders, and the only sure solution to this problem is to put the feeder in a place where the cat cannot get at it. Where you have yours, the cat has a perfect hiding place and it's down too low for the birds to eat safely.

We have ours hung from a tree branch far out away from the tree trunk, so the cats can't climb the tree and get to it. We also have one on a pole which is impossible for cats to climb. This way it's entertaining for the cats to watch the birds, and safe for the birds to come and eat. Another advantage is that squirrels can't get to them either.
Rubber snake and dosing the area with pepper. The rubber snake may deter the birds too, but why not try it.
my advice is to lay in wait with a water pistol or spray bottle even a hose will work. each time you see the cat come near the feeder give it a quick spurt cats hate water and will learn really quick to stay away. this also works to teach cats not to go near certain peices of furniture or the kitchen bench. good luck.
