The squirrles are always in the bird feeder and they chase the birds away. How do I keep squirrles out ofmy bird feeder?
At first I didn't consider squirrels to be bird feeder pests. I thought it was amusing to watch as they jumped from the trees to my feeders and hung upside down as they ate. It was fun until I realized that they were eating up pounds of seed and destroying my feeders.
I've tried putting food out for squirrels in other areas of my yard, which only attracted more squirrels. I've tried expensive squirrel proof feeders, they figure out how to un-squirrel proof them. Most squirrel proof feeders are also harder to fill.
After trying everything else, I have found a few things that work. Since squirrels can jump about seven feet, place your feeders at least eight feet from any jumping surface. Tilting baffles at least 18 inches wide placed above your feeders if hanging, or below your feeders if on a pole, work quite well. If you are hanging your feeders from a horizontal line, place loose fitting plastic tubing over the line. It will spin if squirrels try to walk across it. You can even make your own baffle from common household items like record albums, salad bowls, soda bottles or stovepipe.
Good Luck, JohnHow do I keep squirrles out ofmy bird feeder?
the only way is to buy a special type of feeder they make they only allows the birds to eat and it a squirrel sits on it it closes off the seed
try and putting some vaseline on the supports so they can't climb up the feeder it might help
if you are using a in ground bird feeder:
You can find the items at your local home improvement center.
Use one section of stove pipe. Preferably 8';, costing about $2.50. I tried 6'; and at least one squirrel could beat it.
Stove pipe cap. Another $2.50
Put a hole in the cap so your bird feeder support pipe will fit.
Attach the cap to the pipe with duct tape.
Place a something on the pipe like a wind of wire to hang the unit just below the feeder.
The total cost is less than $6.00.
The squirrels will not be able to get by this device. You can also have fun watching them try.
If you are using a hanging birdfeeder:
Place away from trees-squirrels can jump far.
if using an on the ground open birdfeeder:
thats an open invitation for squirrels
try putting a squirrel feeder somewhere away from your birfeeders
I use a BB Gun. Its the only thing I have found to work...
It's tough to keep them out. I have to give them credit, they are hard to beat. Some kind of inverted cone will hellp somewhat, it's hard, good luck.
Try hanging them with clear fishing line. they have a hard time seeing it and it is hard for them to hold onto.
Attach the birdfeeders to a metal pole. That way the squirrels cannot climb it.
Feed them separately. Obviously they are hungry too. And they can't fly to where more food is. But don't over do it. You don't want them to become dependent.
