My bird feeder is on a 10 cedar post. It is having a house on it's top that holds back the snow and the rain. Today, I saw my cat lying in it on top of my bird seeds. Now, what can I do so she won't climp up there again? Thanks. How can I prevent my cat from climbing up my bird feeder?
Go to a feed store %26amp; get a squirrel guard for the post. Explain the problem %26amp; they will be able to help you. You can also spray the post with one of those sprays that keep cats away. Of course the easiest way to solve this is to keep the cat indoors..How can I prevent my cat from climbing up my bird feeder?
Try cutting the cat's nails, that way the cat wont be able to climb up the post!!
Try giving the cat cat trees, as she/he is most likely climbing up there because in a cat's world, whoever is highest is the most dominant. If your cat doesn't like the trees, try rubbing the post with things that smell like oranges and the top level of the cat tree with catnip or the like.
Build a cat baffle! Very similar to a squirrel baffle, but only for cats :)
Its a cone like thing that goes around a birdfeeder, large wide part face down. The cat (or squirrel) climbs up the post, runs into the baffle, and can't get any farther. You can buy baffles for round birdhouse polls, but for a square cedar post (I'm assuming its square) you might have to custom make one.
For examples of a baffle, check out this website:

All of these are for squirrels, but you should get a good picture of what I'm describing. The one that goes on a pole is in the middle of the webpage.
This depends on how aggressive you want to be. 1st an upside down funnel on the post about 5 feet high. High enough so that your cat will not be able to jump up over it onto the post. Just use a piece of cardboard and wrap it into a funnel shape, wide at the top and small at the bottom. Remember 2nd grade art? Put it on the post upside down so that the kitty will not be able to put her claw on it and climb up it. Have it so the rain/snow slides off and out away from the post.
Then get a cat repellent spray. I got mine at a department store like Kmart. It is an apple spray. It sprays fruit scent and it sticks to what you put it on. I put it on the top of my fridge and window sills and the kitties will not go near it. Saturate the post and funnel but not enough so it would bother the birds.
If you really want to be slick, rub vegetable oil on the post and your poor kitty will have a very hard time going up the post and staying on the bird house. It works to keep people off the poles too. If you are the only one in the neighborhood that has a light that lights up your yard and maybe your neighbors yard. But there are no kids climbing and stealing the light bulbs anymore, they must be good for growing indoor veggies!
They make shields for squirrels. I guess this could work for cats too.
I think you should cover the first five feet (as cats can jump) with something slick/slippery or that the cat just plain doesn't like. Why don't you experiment. Cover it in something like aluminum foil, and place the cat in the room and watch. If she/he claws over it etc. try some other material or oil, but I don't want the cat to lick the oil and get ill, so slash that idea. I would experiment with around the house materials, find the one the cat hates and cover it in it. For a final test, place some treats so the cat will REALLY want to get up there and see if she/he manages.
Good luck!!
Why don't you keep your cat out of the room that the bird is in.
Try rubbing orange or lemon on the first few feet of the post. Cats really dont like the smell of citrus fruits, and will keep away. Then give her a big cuddle for being a good girl!
