It looks like that, what should I paint it like? Its for my mum, and she likes green and geese? Hahha! :) Any ideas???What should I paint my bird feeder like?
Aw, that's cute. I kinda like it the way it is, actually. Maybe, instead of using the paints you could decorate it to blend into the surroundings. Where will your mom put it? In a tree? Maybe buy some cheap fake cloth leaves (like from the craft section at Wally World or Jo-annas fabrics or something) and glue them to the sides...maybe some acorns or pieces of bark or twigs. Or collect pretty, and unique pebbles.
If you want to keep to the goose theme, maybe you could make a collage of pictures of geese. You could just paint it green and paint a simple pattern of geese on it, but I'm pretty sure I've seen those exact things in the craft section at the local flea market.

I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?
They make squirrel baffels that you can put on your bird feeder pole to keep them from climbing up from the bottom, however they are very resourceful and will look for other ways to get to the bird seed.
Feed your squirrels on the ground with some corn.I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?
Squirrels are a real problem.
The squirrel cones and baffles can keep them from climbing poles but they can jump than 6' up to get to something and sideways they can go even farther.I have a bird feeder on a thin pole. Squirrels climb it. How can I stop them? Shooting is not an option.?
Navies all around the world use a sheet metal cone on the ropes holding the ships to the docks. Called ';rat guards';, these are tied to the ropes. The sheet metal cone could be pointed down as not to collect rain. Or an non hardening coal tar, black roof stuff, on the pole or stick.
Get a piece of PVC pipe that is almost as long as the pole. Remove the pole and slide the pipe over it and replace in the ground. PVC is slippery and they cannot climb it.
I tried cones, vaseline, baffels, tied bleach bottles all over the pole. Nothing seemed to stop the little buggers. So I bought one of those elongated bird feeders, made of plastic, covered with fine screening, that has 12 ports for birds to feed. I hung it from a shepherds hook and never had a squirrel get at the feeder all winter. They're out there but they didn't get my bird seed this time.
Here's what I did once. And, it worked.
First, I got a metal bowl (about 18'; in diameter) at Walmart - it was only a few bucks. Next, I cut a hole in the bottom of the bowl large enough for it to slip over the pole. I then slipped the bowl onto the pole such that it would hang upside down when secured to the pole. I then supported it from underneath with a hose clamp on the bottom of it (I had to wrap a bunch of black tape to form a wider spot on the pole than the hole in the bowl when the clamp was installed).
The idea was that the squirrel would climb up the pole and be stopped by the bowl. If he tried to reach out and climb up to the lip of the bowl, his weight would cause the bowl to tip. This sudden drop and change in level of the bowl would cause him to lose his grip and fall to the ground. The bowl would then return to its balanced position to fend off the next squirrel attempt.
If that isn't feasible to do, you can also get a 4- or 5-inch diameter PVC drain pipe (about 4 feet long) to surround the base of the pole. This is too wide for a squirrel to get his arms around and too slippery for him to dig his nails into. Keep in mind that squirrels do jump well. So, you should also make sure the bird feeder is a good distance away from plants, tree branches, or even walls (they can dig their nails into stucco and other siding materials, and jump to a bird feeder).
Good luck.
put squirrel food on the ground level

Put something like vaseline on the pole. Maybe that will stop them. I love them little squirrels but they do eat all the bird seed before the little birdies get any.
Make an inverted cone out of some sheet metal or plastic. It will keep then from climing the pole.

How do you make Hummer Bird Food ? In The Hummer Bird Feeder?
1 part sugar to 4 parts water as some others have already suggested. I like to mix up smaller amounts and change it more often to keep it fresh... rather than filling each feeder up all the way, maybe go half way and then change it out each week or even more often than that.
Simply stir in the sugar until it dissolves completely in the water. There is NO need to boil tap water to kill bacteria- that is a myth. Normal tap water does not have high levels of bacteria unless you've got a major problem with your water. Boiled and Distilled water will also grow mold and bacteria (later as it gets older) that is why it's important to change the nectar regularly. If you want to add red coloring to your nectar that's up to you but I have not found this to be necessary, especially if the feeder already has a lot of red color as an attractant. How do you make Hummer Bird Food ? In The Hummer Bird Feeder?
Do you mean HUMMINGBIRD nectar?
The easiest way, aside from buying it commercially at a store, is to mix 4 parts sterilized water ( to avoid bacteria from harming them) to 1 part sugar ( eg. 1 cut sugar + 4 cups water) and put it in a cheap hummingbird feeder that you can get at Dollarama for a buck OR make your own by filling a plastic bottle and hanging it upside down with a hole in it - not sure how they do that so the nectar doesn't all spill out at once but you can google it and get directions for building them yourself.
Always be careful to resist the urge to give them too much sugar . . . the sweeter the better right? wrong! too much sugar in a concentrated dosage can shut their kidneys down and kill them. So be responsible and enjoy your hummingbirds!!!How do you make Hummer Bird Food ? In The Hummer Bird Feeder?
1 part sugar to 4 parts water. boil the sugar water until all the sugar is dissolved. let it cool down put it in the feeder and add a couple drops of food coloring and there ya go.
1 quart water + 1 cup sugar. Do not add food color....it's not needed and may be bad for them. Keep one feeder out all winter in case of a stray visitor.

What is the correct ratio of sugar and water for a humming bird feeder?
HUMMINGBIRD FEED
1 c. water
1/4 c. sugar
1-2 drops red food color
Mix water and sugar. Heat until sugar is dissolved. Add food color and let cool. Pour into your hummingbird feeder and watch the birds drink! What is the correct ratio of sugar and water for a humming bird feeder?

The post with the 4 parts water to 1 part table sugar is right. I use hot water and don't boil it. The sugar will melt just the same. Don't use red dye. There is no reason to when the feeder itself is probably bright enough, and there are studies out there that say that the dye is causing tumors. Why take the chance? My feeders have clear nectar, and the birds still feed like crazy. Take a look at this great site....

I put a new bird feeder in my back yard 1 week ago, but have had no birds visit. Why?
I bought this great brass solar bird feeder and hung it on a hook designed for such. It hangs on one side of the yard close to a flower bush. Not one bird has stopped by for lunch. The food I bought is a variety. I can't even get a crow to stop. WHY?I put a new bird feeder in my back yard 1 week ago, but have had no birds visit. Why?
There could be a couple of reasons.
~What type of birds is the food suppose to attract and is it the time of year for those birds to be in your area? Experiment with a few types of bird seed to see what you can attract.
~Is there cats in your area? If the birds knows cats are stalking about, they will not try your bird feeder. One of the most valnurable and likely moments for a predator to capture its prey is while they're feeding
~Does you birdfeeding move rapidly and easily with the wind and/or makes noises?
~Is the feeder near a high traffic area (for people, pets, and/or cars)?
Answering ';yes'; to one or more of these questions means you need to move the feeder, purchase a different one, and/or experiment with different types of food.
Good Luck!I put a new bird feeder in my back yard 1 week ago, but have had no birds visit. Why?
Cause they don't like u
There are several possibilites. First - it takes time for the birds to find a new feeder, especially if they are already accustomed to others. Second, you may have placed it too close to a bush or other plant from which a predator could potentially attack. Even if YOU know they can't get there, the birds may not realize that. I suggest moving it within reach of a sheltering plant like a tree, but not so close that a predator could hide in it. I'm not sure about the ';solar'; part, or what function that would serve, so I can't speak to that. Since it's brass, it's presumably shiny, and that could theoretically put some birds off.
are there any cats around?
Be patient. It takes time and once they know it's there they'll return year after year.
Also, if birds of prey are in the area no little bird will venture near...they're to smart for that.
I have bird feeders all through my backyard. I find that if I don't keep the feeders with food in them all the time that the birds will stop coming by. Now I just was able to get out and get these feeders filled just a week ago and it has taken this long for the birds to start coming back. Once they realize the food is there I will be filling th ese about every other day or so.
give them time; it happens to us too. Once one shows up, they'll come in droves. Birds are heavily networked.
Try putting some seed in a dish/paper plate on the ground - that may help get some attention.
Crows eat meat. Put some roadkill in your feeder to attract crows.
It is probably because they don't know about it yet. But when they figure out that it is there, they will come over, trust me. I know it because I have a bird feeder, too.
Hi there. Birds are now appearing slowly as spring approaches. Inspect the area you live in early in the morning. They may come by very soon and establish a routine. My problem is that my cat is very predatory and the birds now avoid my place! I guess the word is out! Weird, huh? Well, don't give up yet and I'm sure they will discover your feeder. Be sure it is high enough so that the birds feel safe enough to approach it. have a great spring.
wait a while....or chage the position where birds can see and smell it
Hi,
It may take a week or two for birds to locate your feeders. Be sure to keep the seed fresh so that when they find it they will want to come back. It may be better to only put small amounts of seed in your feeders to begin with.
Always use good quality seed such as black-oil sunflower seed.
Good Luck,
John

HELP I have bird Suet; but i don't have any bird feeder. Instead of buying a bird feeder how can i make one??
What can i place the Suet on, or hang it in so that the birds can get to it!? Anything will help! Thank you!
Merry Christmas! :]HELP I have bird Suet; but i don't have any bird feeder. Instead of buying a bird feeder how can i make one??
Do you have an onion bag, made from string netting? If so, just drop it down in that, tie the top and hang on a tree limb, with another strong string. Hang it down from the tree limb, the birds will cling to it, and eat, while the squirrels will have a time, getting to it.

When making sugar water for a humming bird feeder what ratio of water to sugar do you use?
Hi,
Very simple recipe:
1 part sugar
4 parts water
First, bring the water to a boil and then slowly add the sugar. Let it boil for a few minutes, then remove from the burner to cool. Store any excess nectar in the refrigerator. Yes, it is that easy!
Hummingbirds cannot smell and depend on their eyesight to seek out flowers and food sources. But do not add food coloring to this hummingbird feeder recipe, it is unnecessary and possibly harmful to the birds. Red portals on the feeders, or even a red ribbon on top, will attract the hummingbirds just as well.
JohnWhen making sugar water for a humming bird feeder what ratio of water to sugar do you use?
One part sugar to four parts water. And, you don't need to add red vegetable colouring. They'll accept the clear nectar solution you have made.
I put one cup of sugar in a bowl, and add 4 cups kettle boiled water. Then I stir it until dissolved and put it into the fridge to cool down. You don't want to burn those little tongues! When making sugar water for a humming bird feeder what ratio of water to sugar do you use?
We used to have TONS of hummingbirds where I grew up. We always made simple syrup for them. Generally its one cup of sugar to two cups of water.... boiled breifly... then let to rest until cool.
The only caution... is it attracts ants. LOTS of ants. Make sure you have the feeder hanging somewhere that it can drip and the ants wont be a problem!
